Frequently Asked Questions

Dando Doors & Windows is a family-owned New Zealand manufacturer of custom timber joinery. For more than 40 years, we have manufactured timber windows and doors under the Dando name, operating from our Mount Roskill premises since the mid-1980s. The business has been passed down through the Dando family from one generation to the next.

What timber joinery do you manufacture?

We manufacture custom timber windows and doors, including entrance doors, French doors, bifold doors, sliding doors, casement windows, awning windows, sliding windows, bifold windows, double-hung windows, bay windows and complete window and door packages.

Do you manufacture custom sizes and designs?

Yes. Every item is custom manufactured to suit the dimensions, design and requirements of your project. We manufacture both traditional joinery for villas, bungalows and character homes and contemporary joinery for modern architectural projects.

How long is your manufacturing lead time?

Our typical manufacturing lead time is approximately 4 weeks from receipt of the deposit, confirmation of final dimensions and approval of the shop drawings. Timing may vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, and we will confirm the expected programme with your quotation or order.

What are shop drawings?

Shop drawings are detailed drawings showing the final dimensions, configuration, opening direction, glazing and other important details for each window or door. They must be carefully reviewed and approved before manufacturing begins.

Why is approval of the shop drawings important?

The approved shop drawings become the manufacturing instructions for your order. Approval confirms that the dimensions, design, opening directions and glazing are correct before the timber is machined and production begins.

What timber species do you use?

We use timber species selected for the required appearance, finish and application. These commonly include Alaskan Yellow Cedar for painted doors and sashes, Western Red Cedar for clear or stained joinery and Radiata Pine for frames. The timber species included in your project will be identified in your quotation.

Can your timber windows and doors be double glazed?

Yes. Our timber joinery can be manufactured for clear double glazing, Low-E glass, safety glass, obscure glass and other specialist glazing options, depending on the design and performance requirements of the project.

Does your timber joinery comply with NZS 4211?

Our timber joinery is manufactured in accordance with the relevant requirements of NZS 4211. Correct installation, glazing, finishing, sealing and ongoing maintenance are also essential to achieving long-term performance.

Do you install the timber joinery?

No. Dando Doors & Windows is a specialist timber joinery manufacturer. We supply the completed joinery for installation by your builder. Installation should be carried out by an experienced builder familiar with timber joinery, New Zealand building requirements and the project documentation.

What is included in the quotation?

The quotation will identify the joinery being supplied and the applicable dimensions, timber species, glazing, delivery and other inclusions. Customers should review the quotation carefully to confirm what is included and advise us of any required changes before accepting it.

What finishing does timber joinery require?

Timber joinery must be correctly prepared, sealed and finished before it is exposed to the weather. All faces, edges, rebates, cut-outs and concealed surfaces should be coated in accordance with the paint or stain manufacturer’s requirements.

How should timber joinery be maintained?

Timber joinery should be regularly cleaned and inspected, with particular attention given to the coating system, glazing seals, joints and exposed edges. Damaged or deteriorating coatings should be repaired promptly, and repainting or restaining should be completed in accordance with the coating manufacturer’s recommendations.

What warranty do you provide?

Dando Doors & Windows provides a 5-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship, subject to the warranty terms and conditions. Correct storage, installation, glazing, finishing and maintenance are essential requirements of the warranty.

Can I view examples of your timber joinery?

Yes. Customers are welcome to visit our Mount Roskill showroom and factory. We can also provide photographs and examples of timber joinery manufactured for villas, bungalows, character homes, renovations and contemporary architectural projects.
